Overview

The University tasked us with creating a "Sustainable Procurement Policy" which provided the groundwork for certification standards that the Universities Students' Union must follow when buying items for resell in university outlets. This policy was passed at SU council and in process of being embedded into the Students' Union.

Goals

To ensure the Students' Union is upholding and extending levels of ethical and sustainable procurement which goes above and beyond what is specified in the Universities' Sustainability strategy.

Timeline

Week 1 - Meeting with Sustainability Committee members and person who came forward with the procurement idea (1 hour)

Week 2 - Meeting to discuss steps to take the idea forward (i.e. deciding to create an SU policy) (1 hour)

Week 3 - Research content for policy (2 hours)

Week 4 - Policy writing session and submission to SU council (3 hours)

Week 5 - Speech writing and SU Council Meeting (3 hours)

Longer description

Week 1 - Discussion meeting with Sustainability Committee members and person who came forward with the procurement idea (1 hour)

This involved an explanation of what said person was trying to achieve

Week 2 - Meeting to discuss steps to take the idea forward (i.e. deciding to create an SU policy) (1 hour)

This involved deciding on the approriate "format" to embede the idea i.e. whether it should be a by-laws change, a discussion with members of staff or a formal SU policy or motion.

Week 3 - Research content for policy (2 hours) i.e. information about types of certifications, relevant stats etc.

Week 4 - Policy writing session and submission to SU council (3 hours)

We used SMART goals to formulate the policy (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Timely)

Week 5 - Speech writing and SU Council Meeting (3 hours)

This involved the presentation of the policy at SU council which was then voted on by councillors

Tips/Comments

Work out who your SU councilors are and utilise them, especially if one focuses on environment/sustainability. Its important to gain an understanding of how your SU works as an entity by consulting different people on the inside, for example, your Development student officer (who focuses on sustainability) and/or staff members who work on procurement, as once they are on board and invested, it ensures that your campaign will be implemented in the most efficient way possible.
