Overview

GreenerAcademia is a group of six PhD students and young scientists that call for more sustainability and diversity for scientific conferences. Our petition demands a virtual participation option at reduced registration fees in order to achieve this goal. We address several scientific organizations and the scientific community to get attention for this topic and make a change.

Goals

The main goal is to convince the scientific organizations that we address in our petition to offer a virtual participation option at reduced registration fees.

Timeline

Month 1) Set up petition (petition text, references, decision makers etc.) and make initial contact with decision makers

Month 2-5) Call for support (friends, sustainability organizations, green offices etc.)

Month 5-now) Stay in contact with decision makers, increase pressure on social media, network with other sustainable academic groups

Longer description

Month 1) Set up petition (petition text, references, decision makers etc.) and make initial contact with decision makers:

First, I asked fellow PhD students whether they are interested in setting up such a petition. After they agreed, we met and decided on the formulation of the petition text and which references to include as we want our petition to be as scientifically founded as possible. The next step was to decide on the decision makers and we made some research on that and made sure that there was no public announcement about a virtual participation option.

After having set up the petition website we added the decision makers and their contact email to make sure that they know about our petition.

Month 2-5) Call for support (friends, sustainability organizations, green offices etc.): We knew that the petition can only be successful if we have many people signing it. Therefore, we started sharing the petition with friends and family in the beginning. We also contacted groups and organizations that work on a similar topic and asked them for support. This was very important as they have much larger networks and are inclined to help us with our issue.

Month 5-now) Stay in contact with decision makers, increase pressure on social media, network with other sustainable academic groups:

After having gained some momentum we directly contacted those decision makers that are most probably inclined to answer our call. We met with them and discussed the issue of virtual participation options but we also listened to their arguments against our ideas. In the meantime, we created a Twitter account to increase public pressure as we have no public answer to our petition. Moreover, we started to network with other sustainable academic groups to share experiences and support. This was also very important because of the rich experience that activists can offer you.

Tips/Comments

The most important thing is stamina and stress tolerance as success might take a long time or never come at all. Make sure that you connect with others because personal support is really helpful and motivational. Also, make sure that you stay in contact with the decision makers to show them that the topic is dear to you and others.
